There have been several technology gurus discussing the fact that the customization of online information and news could in fact divide the country, not pull it together. It might also dissuade people from looking outside their own box and understanding how other people live, think, and the issues that concern them. Previously in the media there have been charges from both sides that individuals only read the information they agree with.
In many cases this is true, it is a good charge, in fact surveys show that this is indeed the kind of things that reinforce one’s opinion, and rather than broaden their perspective, they reinforce it, even if their views are jaded. I can remember times as a conservative being chastised by the politically correct that I only read information that I want to hear, and don’t understand the full picture. I always thought that was baloney because I personally do read both sides of every argument, and then throw away a good bit of it on both sides.
Most of my opinions and views of the world come from actual observations, experiences, and understanding from both sides of the track, and political spectrum. When the FBI looks for homegrown terrorists and threats they look for people who view certain types of information, belong to certain groups, and have certain political leanings.

It would be quite easy to change the ads on someone’s smart phone to the types of things that a terrorist might buy to do their dirty deeds, and of course only they would see the ad, because it would be fake. It would be a good way to catch someone. Also creating fake stories in the news only made for potential terrorists, and allowing that to come onto their personalized newsfeeds would be a way to get them to act, contact a co-conspirator, or go to a location of a fake event that didn’t actually exist to catch them.
